Superintendent’s. Memo #122 (DOE's Web site www.doe.virginia.gov) Outlines the changes to the new driver's license effective July 1, 2007.
Changes include:
- The validity period of the current 90-day temporary driver's license will be extended to 180 days. This extension will allow courts and juvenile drivers additional time to schedule the judge's presentation of the permanent licenses.
- The learner's permit issue date has been added to the new 180-day driver's license. Also included on the 180-day licensing form is the 2007 legislation concerning the use of wireless telecommunication devices by certain drivers: "Except in a driver emergency or when the vehicle is lawfully parked or stopped, the holder of a provisional driver's license less than 18 years old, shall not operate a motor vehicle on the highways of the Commonwealth while using any cellular telephone or any other wireless telecommunications device, regardless of whether such device is or is not hand-held."
- Changes to the parent permission form (Click here for PPF-07 form)
- Includes date learner's permit was issued.
- Includes learner's permit expiration date for student holding an immigrant or nonimmigrant visa. The learner's permit and the 180-day driver's license expiration date should be the same as the visa expiration date. If you are issuing a 180-day license to a student with a visa, the expiration must align with the visa expiration date or the learner's permit expiration date. If there is no expiration date on the visa, the learner's permit + the driver license will be valid for one year.
- The following statement is also on the revised parent form: “Please contact DMV at 1-866-368-5463 if you do not receive notification from your local Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court within 90 days from the 180-day validation date on your temporary driver's license.”
